Finally, after finally getting a break from work and a few hours to waste, I finished the beast.
The Lava Reef Zone has got to be one of my all-time favorite stages in a Sonic the Hedgehog game. This one stands out because of it's kick-ass theme song that constantly plays in my head, on my iPod, in my car, at work...hell, I even make sure I get EVERY remix of the Lava Reef Zone theme I can find. Go over to [link] and browse the Sonic & Knuckles section. Kick-ass I tell ya, kick ass! I wanted to do something with this picture that I had done with some of my Don Bluth and Disney inspired pieces, giving it sort of an animated feature look. For the most part, the background was done in Painter X, while the rest was Photoshop. Overall, even though it's not perfect, it's classic Sonic and I like it! And I agree with you one of my fav stages ^^ plenty of lava pools to annihilate the over zealous speedster who thinks he can speed run by just holding right...
You can just feel the heat when playing... and I can swear i can from this pic as well. The textures hold true to the original in game minus the pixelated edges.

For a long time it gave me nightmares...
Having to witness an injustice like that.
It was a constant reminder of how unfair this world can be.
I can still hear them taunting him;

Lava Reef zone! I loved and hated that zone at the same time... Looked great, but I hated lava stages in games, since they were always more of a challenge... There'd always seem to be a lava stage in every game. =\ Huhh.....
